Occupational Therapy (OT) is our core service at Power Play. OT is dedicated to helping children develop all of the abilities they need to for the many “jobs” of childhood. These may include playing, doing well in school, or self-care skills such as dressing, eating, etc. Occupational Therapists will help children enhance their strength, coordination, sensory processing and physical abilities to help them function at their highest level of ability. When necessary, an Occupational Therapist will teach compensatory strategies or use environmental accommodations to maximize a child’s independence. With new abilities comes greater confidence, and OT helps children develop the self-confidence they need to succeed in life.
Physical Therapy (PT) assists children in reaching their highest level of functional mobility and wellness. Therapy sessions and group programs aim to build strength, coordination, physical abilities and overall fitness for optimal quality of life as it relates to movement and health. Physical Therapists also encourage proper body mechanics and teach children to move around their world safely and efficiently.
Speech-Language Therapy (SLP). A Speech and Language Pathologist addresses the fundamental ability for children to communicate. Speech therapy sessions often aim to improve a child’s ability to understand and use language to express thoughts, feelings and needs effectively. Oral-motor skills, including feeding, may also be addressed during speech therapy sessions.
In addition to our therapy services, Power Play offers a variety of innovative group programs throughout the year.
Write Strong! Handwriting Program: This program is designed to help children “show what they know” through functional, legible handwriting. Write Strong! uses fun, therapeutic activities and multi-sensory techniques to teach proper sizing, spacing and letter formation to print and cursive writers.
Kicks and Giggles! Karate Program: Children can kick and punch (and giggle) their way to fitness and higher self-esteem! Kicks and Giggles! provides the structure of a traditional martial arts program while focusing on improving coordination, balance, strength and sensory processing. It celebrates every achievement, regardless of a child’s special needs or physical abilities.
Power Play Date! Social Skills Program: This group program allows children with special needs to learn social skills and practice them in a fun, interactive format with their peers. The small groups work on such skills as taking turns, sharing, following directions and praising. This program is also designed to focus on motor planning, self-regulation and communication and includes a variety of multi-sensory activities.
Power Play! Q and A. Parent Training Sessions: This program is a chance for parents to visit Power Play! and ask specific questions about their own child’s development. These sessions are free and open to the public. Please call Power Play for future dates.
